Het Maastrichtse duo Jodymoon presenteerde met de release van hun album The Machine (2025) hun nieuwe sound. Moderne kijk op singer-songwriter sound
Digna Janssen en Johan Smeets zochten na het uitbrengen van hun live-album in 2023 naar nieuwe muzikale ideeën. Die vonden ze toen Johan een oude drummachine uit de kast haalde en daarmee ging spelen. Het nummer The Machine ontstond en is ook meteen het titelnummer van de nieuwe plaat en de nieuwe tour geworden. “The Machine is het eerste Jodymoon nummer waarop een drummachine is gebruikt”, zegt Digna. “We wilden een moderne kijk op het singer-songwriter geluid creëren maar het hart van onze liedjes bewaren en dat is denk ik gelukt.” Ook de elektrische gitaar werd herontdekt en neemt een prominente plaats in op het nieuwe album. Vernieuwing en verfrissing
Rode draad op The Machine is hoe we ons bewegen naar een door kunstmatige intelligentie en algoritmes gereguleerde samenleving. We worden steeds afhankelijker van apparaten en computers. Leveren we hiermee onze kennis en kunde, het ambacht in? Willen we niet eigenlijk terug naar de basis, de natuur en de menselijkheid? En, kunnen we wel terug? Rond dit thema hebben Digna en Johan tien inspirerende songs geschreven en opgenomen, in de studio voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van Jodymoon bijgestaan door … een machine! Jodymoon kiest met de frisse urban-pop-folk op The Machine voor vernieuwing maar blijft doen wat we al die jaren van hen gewend zijn: pakkende songs schrijven en op een bevlogen manier uitvoeren.
Jodymoon
Jodymoon werd in 2006 opgericht door zangeres/pianiste Digna Janssen en multi-instrumentalist Johan Smeets. De twee wonnen in 2008 met hun mix van folk, pop en roots de publieksprijs van de Grote Prijs van Nederland. Jodymoon heeft sindsdien zeven studioalbums uitgebracht, die zonder uitzondering lovende recensies kregen. Eind 2023 bracht het duo het dubbelalbum ‘The Best of Live 2013-2023’ uit met live opnames van de afgelopen tien jaar, opgenomen tijdens concerten in onder meer Amsterdam, Bilbao, Hamburg, Heerlen, Keulen en thuisstad Maastricht. The Machine (maart 2025) is hun achtste studioalbum.

THE MACHINE
A new album, a new sound, and new shows
The Maastricht-based duo Jodymoon introduced a new sound with the release of their album The Machine (2025). Inspired by a drum machine and a rediscovered electric guitar, the familiar Jodymoon sound takes on a catchy urban twist on this eighth studio album. “A bold step for Jodymoon that fully succeeds – The Machine is innovative and captivating…,” wrote music platform De Alternatieve Muziekman in their 4-star review. A modern take on the singer-songwriter sound
After releasing their live album in 2023, Digna Janssen and Johan Smeets went in search of new musical ideas. They found them when Johan pulled an old drum machine off the shelf and started experimenting. The track The Machine was born, which also became the title track of the new record and tour.
“The Machine is the first Jodymoon song to feature a drum machine,” says Digna. “We wanted to create a modern take on the singer-songwriter sound while preserving the heart of our songs, and I think we’ve succeeded.” The electric guitar was also rediscovered and now takes a prominent place on the new album. Renewal and refreshment
The recurring theme on The Machine is how we are moving towards a society increasingly regulated by artificial intelligence and algorithms. We are becoming more and more dependent on devices and computers. Are we sacrificing our knowledge, skills, and craftsmanship in the process? Don’t we actually long to return to the basics – to nature and humanity? And can we even go back? Around this theme, Digna and Johan have written and recorded ten inspiring songs, for the first time in Jodymoon’s history with the help of… a machine! With the fresh urban-pop-folk sound of The Machine, Jodymoon embraces innovation while continuing to do what they’ve always done: write compelling songs and perform them with passion.
Jodymoon
Jodymoon was founded in 2006 by singer/pianist Digna Janssen and multi-instrumentalist Johan Smeets. In 2008, with their mix of folk, pop, and roots, they won the Audience Award at the prestigious Dutch competition De Grote Prijs van Nederland. Since then, Jodymoon has released seven studio albums, all of which received rave reviews. At the end of 2023, the duo released the double album The Best of Live 2013–2023, featuring live recordings from the past ten years at concerts in Amsterdam, Bilbao, Hamburg, Heerlen, Cologne, and their hometown of Maastricht. The Machine (March 2025) is their eighth studio album.
